Suspected Bangladeshis sent to detention centre in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, June 30 (UNI) In a crackdown on illegal immigrants, Odisha police today apprehended around 18 suspected Bangladeshi nationals, residing illegally at different locations of coastal Kendrapara district.
As part of the ongoing drive to identify foreign nationals infiltrating the district, at least 18 individuals were found staying illegally in Rajendranarayanpur, Rangani, Kereragada and Gopalpur villages.
They failed to produce their identity proof in support of their claim that they were Indians. As they were well-versed in Bengali language, it is being suspected that they are Bangladeshi infiltrators, said the Inspector-in-charge of Talachua marine police station, Bimal Kumar Mallick.
As they failed to prove that they were Indians, they have now been kept in a detention Centre in Kendrapara. Further interrogation was on.
It may be noted here that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi during his visit to Kendrapara on June 9 had ordered the district administration and police to initiate steps for identification of foreign nationals unlawfully residing in the area.
It may be recalled here that Chief Minister Majhi, who holds the Home portfolio, had told the Assembly in March last that 3,738 Bangladeshi infiltrators have been identified and they are illegally staying in the state.
Kendrapara with 1649 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants has the highest number of infiltrators followed by 1,112 in Jagatsinghpur, 655 in Malkangiri, 199 in Bhadrak, 106 in Nabarangpur and 17 in Bhubaneswar.
In the aftermath of religious persecution, Bangladeshi nationals have infiltrated to Odisha before and after India attained independence. The scale of infiltration to the state had become more pronounced during the Bangla liberation war in 1971, said an official.
As per the refugee resettlement policy of the then Centre Government, as many as 1,57,432 Bangladeshi settlers have been rehabilitated in 11 districts of the state and they are enjoying the rights that Indian citizens are entitled to.
Malkangiri district, located on the southern tip of the State, is home to 1,04,233 Bangla refugees followed by 46,848 in Nabarangpur, 4,653 in Khurda, 441 in Kendrapara, 379 in Jajpur, 304 in Rayagada, 200 in Bhadrak, 194 in Koraput, 90 in Kalahandi, 75 in Balasore and 15 in Angul.
It may be noted here that 1,711 Bangladeshis from coastal Odisha were served 'quit India' notice in 2005 in accordance with Foreigners Act provision. However the exercise to deport them was put on hold by the Centre amid allegations of wrongful identification of the suspected foreign nationals.
However 21 Bangladeshi nationals were deported to their country under foreigners Act prior to 2005, concluded the official. UNI XC SSP
