Türkiye deploys Osman Gazi to Black Sea, targets doubling gas output by 2027

Ankara, Oct 17 (UNI) Opening a new chapter in Türkiye’s energy history, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Saturday that the Osman Gazi floating natural gas production platform has been deployed to the Black Sea, with the aim of doubling domestic gas output to 20 million cubic metres per day by 2027.
“Today, we are opening a brand-new page in our energy history. We are sending Osman Gazi, essentially a floating industrial facility, off to its duty station in the Black Sea,” Erdogan said in a video message to a ceremony marking the platform’s departure from Filyos Port in the northern province of Zonguldak.
The platform departed from Filyos Port in the northern province of Zonguldak for the Sakarya Gas Field, where it will process offshore gas and transport it to shore through subsea pipelines, Erdoğan said in a video message marking the departure.
"Natural gas production in the Black Sea will double to 20 million cubic metres per day, and starting in 2027, one in every three households will use our domestic natural gas," Erdoğan said.
The deployment is part of Türkiye's efforts to expand domestic energy production and reduce reliance on imported gas. The country has been developing the Sakarya field as a key source of offshore supplies.
The 298.5-metre-long platform has 21 processing units and can accommodate up to 140 personnel. It is designed to operate continuously at sea for 20 years, according to information released by Türkiye's Communications Directorate.
Once operational, the facility is expected to help raise production from the Sakarya field to 20 million cubic metres per day, enough to meet the gas needs of about 8 million households, the directorate said. It projected the platform would contribute $3.5 billion annually to the Turkish economy.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar attended the departure ceremony and described Osman Gazi as Türkiye's first floating natural gas processing facility.
Erdoğan said the platform represented a milestone in the country's maritime and energy strategy, describing it as the first production facility under its "Blue Homeland" vision, which forms part of the broader "Century of Türkiye" initiative.
Erdogan expressed hope that the platform would benefit the country and its people, thanked those involved in the project and wished success to the personnel who will operate it. UNI AAB
