Top 10 star Musetti crashes out at Wimbledon 2025

London, July 1 (UNI) Last year’s Wimbledon semifinalist, Lorenzo Musetti, became the third Top 10 seed to suffer a shock first-round exit at The Championships this year, as Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili today stunned the seventh seed 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 on Court No 2.
The defeat marked Basilashvili’s eighth career win over a Top 10 player — but his first ever at a Grand Slam. It was also Musetti’s third opening-round loss at Wimbledon and his third Grand Slam defeat to a player ranked outside the Top 125.
The Italian, currently No 7 in the PIF ATP Rankings, came into the tournament without any competitive grass-court preparation due to a left leg adductor injury sustained during his Roland Garros semifinal loss to Carlos Alcaraz. He admitted to being far from his best.
With this loss, Musetti joins fellow Top 10 stars Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev in making first-round exits. The trio's early departures could have implications in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, with Musetti now fifth, Rune tenth, and Medvedev 16th. Former ATP Finals winner Stefanos Tsitsipas also bowed out early, retiring due to a back injury, and sits 22nd in the race.
Despite leading the tour with 12 wins on grass this year, Musetti's lack of match fitness showed as Basilashvili dominated the baseline and racked up 48 winners in a match that lasted two hours and 25 minutes.
The 32-year-old Georgian will now face Lorenzo Sonego, who defeated Portugal’s Jaime Faria 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
Elsewhere on Day 2, last year’s quarterfinalists Alex de Minaur and Tommy Paul both secured their first grass-court wins of the season. De Minaur dispatched Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(2), while Paul ousted British wildcard Johannus Monday 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
The Australian next faces either Arthur Cazaux or Adam Walton, while Paul takes on Austria’s Sebastian Ofner in the second round.
