TPSODL restores power supply to over 17.23 lakh consumers in south Odisha after Cyclone Arnab

Bhubaneswar, Oct 31 (UNI) In a major post-cyclone restoration effort, TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL) has successfully restored electricity supply to more than 17.23 lakh consumers across Southern Odisha following the impact of Very Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Arnab’, accompanied by torrential rainfall and flooding.
The power distribution utility, a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, has restored electricity to 17,23,185 out of the total 17,88,942 affected consumers across its eight operational districts. Restoration work is continuing on a war footing to reconnect the remaining affected consumers.
The cyclone and subsequent heavy rainfall caused extensive damage to the power distribution infrastructure. Strong winds uprooted electricity poles, snapped power lines and disrupted distribution networks at several locations. Flooding and waterlogging further hampered restoration efforts, particularly in low-lying and inaccessible areas.
According to TPSODL, all 130 affected 33/11 kV Primary Substations (PSS) have been restored, while 45 of the 46 affected 33 kV feeders have been brought back into operation. Similarly, 651 of the 658 affected 11 kV feeders and 277 of the 278 affected power transformers have been restored. The utility has also restored 55,265 of the 56,706 affected distribution transformers.
Ganjam district, one of the worst-hit areas due to the cyclone and subsequent flooding, has recorded 93.23 per cent restoration. Electricity supply has been reinstated to 7,73,129 of the 8,29,292 affected consumers in the district.
Among the other districts, Kandhamal has achieved 99.13 per cent restoration, while Gajapati has recorded 96.09 per cent. Malkangiri, Boudh and Rayagada districts have achieved 100 per cent restoration, with electricity supply restored to all affected consumers. Nabarangpur has recorded 99.65 per cent restoration, while Koraput has achieved 99.20 per cent.
Commenting on the restoration efforts, TPSODL CEO Amit Garg said that restoring electricity supply to more than 17 lakh consumers and achieving over 96 per cent restoration was a significant milestone in the company's response to the cyclone.
He appreciated the dedication and commitment of frontline personnel who continued working tirelessly despite heavy rainfall, flooding and other challenging conditions.
Garg further said that special attention was being given to affected pockets in Ganjam district, where severe waterlogging and inaccessible locations had delayed restoration work. Teams are making every effort to restore electricity supply to the remaining consumers at the earliest.
Meanwhile, TPSODL has appealed to consumers to exercise caution and stay away from fallen electrical wires, damaged electricity poles and submerged electrical installations to avoid accidents.
