Tremors jolt Kashmir as 5.8 magnitude quake hits Afghanistan

Srinagar, Apr 19 (UNI) A moderate earthquake with an epicentre in Afghanistan hit the region on Saturday, with tremors felt across several parts of Kashmir, officials said.



The 5.8 magnitude earthquake occurred at 12.17 pm at a latitude of 36.10 degrees North and longitude of 71.20 degrees East in Afghanistan at a depth of 130 kilometres, the official said.





“Earthquake of M: 5.8, On: 19/04/2025 12:17:53 IST, Lat: 36.10 N, Long: 71.20 E, Depth: 130 Km, Location: Afghanistan,” National Centre for Seismology- which monitors earthquake activity all across the country- said on X.



There were no immediate reports of any damage. However, the tremors created panic in several parts of Kashmir.

Srinagar, Apr 19 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Anti Corruption Bureau has unearthed a major corruption in the dredging of the flood spill channel of the Hokersar wetland- a Ramsar-designated wetland of international importance on Srinagar outskirts.
The dredging project was initiated to enhance the flood-carrying capacity of the spill channel in the aftermath of the devastating 2014 floods, aiming to mitigate future flood risks in Srinagar. Known as the “Queen of Wetlands,” Hokersar plays a critical ecological role and is home to numerous migratory bird species.
