Tripura road works halted after Mizoram protest over Phuldungsei encroachment

Aizawl, Apr 17 (UNI) Acting on the directives of the Mizoram government, Mamit Deputy Commissioner K. Laltlawmlova has asked his North Tripura counterpart Chandni Chandran to immediately stop the construction of a link road at Thaidawr hill in Phuldungsei village, located near the inter-state boundary, Mizoram Home Minister K. Sapdanga said on Thursday.
Sapdanga informed that the communication was made on Wednesday evening, following which the construction activity was halted the same day. He said initial efforts to address the issue are being made at the Deputy Commissioner level, and that the state government is prepared to initiate dialogue at the state level if required.
The issue came to light when the Mizoram government received reports of the North Tripura administration allegedly carrying out road construction work inside Mizoram’s territory. In response, the state Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Lalthansanga was dispatched to the site in Phuldungsei on Tuesday to assess the situation.
Lalthansanga, during his visit, criticised the North Tripura district administration for what he described as encroachment onto Mizoram land. He acknowledged, however, that the state government had long overlooked the area and pledged greater developmental attention moving forward.
On Wednesday, leaders of the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the apex Mizo students' body, visited Thaidawr under the leadership of its President H. Lalthianghlima. The student leaders asserted that Thaidawr hill falls well within Mizoram territory, citing demarcations laid down in the 1933 notification issued under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) of 1873. The MZP called for prompt intervention by the Mizoram government to stop road construction activities initiated by the Tripura side.
The students’ body further accused the Mizoram government of administrative neglect, saying such inaction had allowed the Tripura government to carry out development works inside what they claim is Mizoram land.
The Phuldungsei area has long been a flashpoint, with both Mizoram and Tripura laying claim to the village and its surrounding lands. Occasional disputes and tensions have emerged over the years, with both sides accusing each other of encroachments in the disputed region.
