Two Afghan nationals executed by Iranian authorities on charges of drug trafficking

Kabul/Tehran, June 13 (UNI) Two more Afghan nationals have been executed by Iranian authorities over charges of drug trafficking. The development marks the latest incident in Iran’s increased killings of Afghans witnessed since last year.

The two nationals -- Zubeid Ali-Maleki from Sheberghan and Salim from Kabul -- were executed after spending approximately three years in prison, reports Tolo News.

According to the latest data from Iran Human Rights Organisation, at least 35 Afghan citizens have so far been executed in Iran since the beginning of 2025 — an alarming figure that has heightened concerns about the legal status of Afghan migrants in Iran.

Iran Human Rights Organisation wrote: “Zubeid Ali-Maleki, originally from Sheberghan, had been arrested three years ago on drug-related charges and sentenced to death. Salim, from Kabul, was also arrested about three years ago on similar charges and received a death sentence.”

Asif Faqiri, a legal expert, stated: “Migration cases like this fall within the jurisdiction of international refugee organizations, which must intervene and act as supervisory bodies to ensure transparency in legal proceedings.”

Most Afghans who are incarcerated in Iranian jails are arrested on charges of drug smuggling, robbery, kidnapping, murder, rape etc. However, the legal processes for the arrested Afghans have been heavily questioned, as those incarcerated are denied consular access, any sort of trial, and most of these are heavily secretive, stemming from the country’s anti-Afghan bias.
