Ukrainian President Zelensky warns foreign officials against attending Russia’s 80th Victory Day celebrations

Kyiv/Moscow, May 3 (UNI) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned foreign officials against attending the May 9 Victory Day parade in Moscow, and stated that Kyiv cannot guarantee their safety amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
"Our position is very simple in relation to all countries that visited or are planning to visit Russia on May 9 - we cannot take responsibility for what happens on the territory of the Russian Federation. They ensure your safety," he asserted, according to RIA Novosti.
Russian President Vladmir Putin had declared a truce on Monday, for Moscow’s Victory Day celebrations. The truce will be in effect from May 7 midnight, till May 11, during which all military activities will be stopped.
However, Kyiv has refused any ceasefire and will carry on with military actions. Retorting to threats posed by Ukraine, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasised that the ceremonial event will take place as usual with all its splendour, and Russians will watch it with pride.
Celebrating the 80th anniversary of the historic victory of the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany during World War II, the Victory Day is one of Russia’s most important national holidays, and honours the sacrifices made by the Soviet people.
The holiday sees large military parades in Moscow’s Red Square, with countries such as the Serbia, Mongolia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Moldova, India, China, Vietnam, Cuba, among others sending their military regiments to participate in the parade occasionally.
On the eve of Easter, Putin declared a 30-hour ceasefire. All Russian troop groups in the SVO zone strictly observed the ceasefire and remained at their previously occupied lines and positions.
In turn, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continued to strike Russian cities. As the Defence Ministry reported, the enemy violated the ceasefire 4,900 times. In addition to artillery and drone strikes, the Ukrainian military attempted six assaults in the DPR and Kursk region, though the Russian troops repelled the attacks.
More than three years into the war, signs of fatigue are emerging among some international partners, with growing calls for a negotiated end to the conflict. In a notable shift, the Trump administration — which returned to power in 2025 — expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his visit to Washington, reportedly criticising his wartime leadership.
While US officials insist that its support for Kyiv’s sovereignty and territorial integrity remains firm, military aid has slowed, and Washington is now pushing harder for a negotiated settlement.
