Unexploded landmines claim 200 lives in a single Afghan village over 3 decades

Kabul, May 25 (UNI) After facing decades of major conflicts, unexploded landmines continue to pose a lethal risk in Afghanistan, with one village in Parwan province's Koh Safi district reporting approximately 200 fatalities in a single area alone.
Residents of Jawzak, a remote village home to nearly a thousand families, describe a landscape still hazardous with hidden explosives.
Mohsin Khan, a local resident, conveyed the enduring toll: "There have been many landmines here over the past 30 years, and they have martyred many people.
“We have nearly 200 martyrs due to mine explosions, and the number of people injured by mines is also very high,” reports Tolo News.

Another villager, Omar Gul, said "There are mines everywhere you go—on every hill and in every field."
The human impact is evident in the experience of individuals like Ghulam Sakhi. Having lost a hand and a leg to a landmine while collecting firewood, he said "I didn’t recognise the mine, and when I picked it up, it exploded and took my hand and leg." His injuries now prevent him from working.
Despite the broader restoration of security across Afghanistan over the past four years, these remnants from previous conflicts continue to claim victims, including women and children.
Local authorities in Parwan have indicated plans to address the issue, with Sayed Hikmatullah Shamim, spokesperson for the provincial governor, stating "The provincial leadership will coordinate this matter with the relevant departments, and the issue will be addressed soon."
The ongoing threat underscores the immense challenge of post-conflict reconstruction and demining efforts in Afghanistan. UNI ANV SSP
