Union minister slams Congress on Emergency anniversary, calls for responsible Opposition

Hyderabad, June 25 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar released a strongly worded statement in Hyderabad on Wednesday, marking the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in India.
He described the period beginning June 25, 1975, as the "darkest chapter in Indian democracy," accusing the Congress party of “murdering democracy” in its thirst for power.
Reflecting on the 21-month-long Emergency, Bandi Sanjay said, “It was a period when citizens' voices were silenced, civil liberties were crushed, and opposition leaders from RSS, ABVP, and Jana Sangh were jailed under MISA. Press censorship was enforced and even MPs who dared to question the government were stripped of their membership.”
He highlighted the arrest of several prominent leaders from the Telugu states during that time, including DSP Reddy, Janga Reddy, V. Rama Rao, Jupudi Yagna Narayana, PV Chalapathi Rao, Venkaiah Naidu, CH Vidyasagar Rao, Indrasena Reddy, and Ashok Yadav.
Bandi Sanjay also criticised the Congress for misusing Article 356 to destabilize state governments, saying, “From 1947 to 2014, the Congress party used Article 356 nearly 90 times to dismiss opposition-led governments.”
Calling the Congress a party steeped in “vote bank politics, electoral violence, and disrespect for constitutional values,” he accused its leaders of continuing to spread falsehoods and defame India globally.
“While Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency under the excuse of foreign plots, Rahul Gandhi today appeals abroad, claiming democracy is under threat in India. This is shameful,” he said.
The Minister urged Congress leaders to abandon what he termed as “dirty politics” and to function as a constructive opposition. “Let Parliament debates be centred on public issues, and not on false narratives. The Congress must now stand with the people and uphold democratic values,” he added.
