UoH, miBiome Therapeutics secure patent for high-throughput DNA, RNA screening technology

Hyderabad, Oct. 15 (UNI) The University of Hyderabad (UoH) and Mumbai-based miBiome Therapeutics LLP have secured an Indian patent for a technology designed to enable high-throughput processing of DNA and RNA samples, with potential applications in mass screening, infectious disease surveillance and genomic research.
The Indian Patent Office granted the patent, recently for the invention titled “Method of Pooling Multiple Reverse Indexed DNA/RNA Samples and Adding Single Indexed Forward Primer and Application Thereof”, the university said in a release on Thursday.
The inventors are Prof. Sreenivasulu Kurukuti of the Department of Animal Biology, School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad, and Dr. Gautam Das of miBiome Therapeutics LLP.
The technology emerged from a collaborative research initiative undertaken during the COVID-19 pandemic to develop scalable, efficient and cost-effective molecular diagnostic methods.
The patented method uses combinatorial indexing and unique molecular barcodes to identify individual DNA and RNA samples. The samples are pooled and assigned an additional pool-specific barcode, enabling their identities to be retained during large-scale next-generation sequencing (NGS).
By reusing sample-specific indexing primers across differently indexed pools, the method has a theoretical capacity to distinguish samples from 92,160 individuals using a 96 × 960 indexing arrangement, with scope for further scaling to millions of samples.
The technology could reduce library preparation requirements, processing time and sequencing costs, with potential applications in population-scale diagnostics, infectious disease monitoring, mass screening and genomic research.
The patent marks a collaborative research effort between academia and industry to develop scalable molecular technologies for public health and life sciences.
