UP: ECI suspends 2 AROs of Pilibhit over irregularities in voter list

Lucknow, Nov 1 (UNI) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken strict action in connection with alleged irregularities in the voter list for the Pilibhit Assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
The Commission on Sunday ordered the suspension of two Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Mayank Goswami and Hemant Chaudhary, and directed that their chargesheets be sent to the Commission for investigation and that they not be reinstated without its prior permission.
The Commission issued this directive in a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Navdeep Rinwa.
The Commission also directed that Section 198 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 2023, be added to the FIR already registered against the two officials and Anil Kumar, the computer operator at the voter registration centre. The Commission has called for strict action in the matter.
The case came to light after an investigation into alleged irregularities in 10,470 entries in the voter list in Pilibhit Assembly constituency number 127. The investigation revealed that a computer assistant had allegedly misused his login ID on the ECINET portal and filed 13,779 Form-8 applications for voter details amendments between May 31 and August 29. Of these, 10,470 applications were approved, while 3,309 were rejected.

Surprisingly, the forms and supporting documents associated with these applications were not found in the relevant office. This sparked controversy, with opposition parties, including the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, alleging widespread manipulation of the voter list.

Following the incident, Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa directed all district election officers in the state to deactivate the ECINET portal login IDs of computer assistants posted at voter registration centres. The EROs concerned were also asked to confirm this.

Additionally, the firm concerned has been directed to immediately terminate the services of the outsourced computer assistant allegedly involved in the Pilibhit case. District Election Officers have been asked to personally verify the actions taken in all assembly constituencies and submit a compliance report to the Chief Electoral Officer's office.
