UP outperforms national average in stopping cyber fraud funds

Lucknow, Oct 2(UNI) Uttar Pradesh is strengthening police action against cyber fraud through technology. The state’s rate of freezing funds involved in cyber fraud stood at 34 per cent, higher than the national average of 31 per cent in September, officials said.
Through the Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre, officials are freezing and recovering diverted funds through real-time routing. In several cases, recovery of up to 100 per cent has been recorded within the stipulated time limit.
''In September, the state’s rate of freezing funds involved in cyber fraud stood at 34pc, higher than the national average of 31pc. The state has also conducted 84,000 cyber awareness drives to prevent cybercrime. Through these campaigns, people were made aware of phishing, fake websites, data theft, fake approvals, and other methods of cyber fraud,'' officials said.
At various locations, from cinema halls to railway stations, people were informed about exercising caution during digital transactions and checking the authenticity of any digital platform.
Cyber Fraud Mitigation Center plays an important role in stopping funds involved in cyber fraud. As soon as a complaint is received, action is initiated through the concerned bank to stop the funds. Through real-time routing and data sharing, the process of freezing diverted funds and recovering them is taken forward. This helps address the challenge of funds rapidly moving into other accounts after fraud.
On the directions of CM Adityanath, DG Cyber Crime Vinod Kumar Singh has equipped police personnel in the state with advanced technology. Personnel are also being trained in new technologies to combat cybercrime. In view of AI deepfakes, mule accounts and changing methods of cybercrime, emphasis is being laid on enhancing the technical capabilities of the police.
SP Cyber Crime Rajesh Yadav stated that time is the most important factor in cyber fraud. He said that making a complaint within the first hour significantly increases the possibility of getting the funds held or frozen. He said cybercriminals target people through several methods, including phishing, fake websites, data theft, and fake approvals. In such a situation, it is essential to verify the authenticity of a digital platform while using it and remain alert.
Under the leadership of the CM, a strong system has been established in the state to deal with cybercrime. Every police station has a cyber help desk. Meanwhile, a 1930 call centre and Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre are being operated in Lucknow. As soon as a complaint is received, action is taken through the concerned bank to stop the funds.
Cybercrime has no geographical boundaries. Therefore, to combat it, participation is also necessary from schools and colleges, gram panchayats, self-help groups, youth and sports clubs and local organisations, along with the police and banks. The losses caused by cyber fraud can be reduced through awareness and prompt reporting.
Meanwhile, the UP government has made several changes to the training curriculum for 41,424 Home Guard aspirants, keeping modern requirements in mind. A blueprint has been prepared to implement the necessary changes. At the direction of CM Adityanathi, the government has added subjects on cybercrime awareness and digital security to the training curriculum for Home Guard aspirants.
Along with this, aspirants will also be provided training in gender sensitization. The objective is to make aspirants aware not only of the traditional responsibilities related to security arrangements but also of the new challenges emerging in the changing times.
Home Guard DG DK Thakur stated that with the increasing use of digital media, cybercrime methods have also changed. In this context, Home Guard aspirants will receive training on identifying cybercrime, digital security, and the precautions needed to protect the general public from cyber fraud.
During training, aspirants will learn about common cybercrime methods and ways to prevent them. Topics such as online fraud, fake calls and messages, suspicious links, fraud through social media, and precautions to take during digital transactions will be part of the training.
Along with basic digital security rules, aspirants will also learn precautions to take if they become victims of cybercrime and how to inform the concerned mechanism. With Home Guard personnel present at the local level, this cyber awareness training may also help bring security-related information to the general public.
The DG stated that gender sensitization has also been included in Home Guard training. Under this, aspirants will learn about equality and respectful behavior towards women and men, understand gender discrimination, and practice responsible behavior in sensitive situations.
