Vij vows to fight power privatisation 'to the finish', says state will challenge regulator's order

Ambala, Oct 2 (UNI) In a firm defence of public sector control over power distribution, Haryana Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Anil Vij on Wednesday declared his unwavering opposition to electricity privatisation and asserted that the state government would challenge the regulatory commission's decision to grant a parallel distribution licence to a private entity in Gurugram and Nuh.
Addressing the media here, Vij made it clear that his department had vigorously opposed the move before the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission. "Our stand is on record in writing, and anyone can access the relevant documents to see the objections we raised," he said.
"The regulatory commission has delivered its order, and we will appeal against it. We will pursue this matter to its logical conclusion," he stated, signalling the government's intent to contest the decision through all available legal avenues.
With electricity employees staging protests against the licence, Vij said he had convened a meeting with their representatives at his office on Tuesday, having already held discussions with them earlier. "If a better solution emerges, we are open to accepting it," he added, indicating room for dialogue even as the government prepares to move court.

Turning to the opposition's attack on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Vij dismissed demands that the BJP clarify how many "infiltrators" had been identified, saying the question should be put to the Election Commission, not his party. "The BJP does not prepare voter lists," he said, accusing the opposition of having "completely lost its way".
He underscored that the Election Commission prepares electoral rolls and gives political parties adequate opportunity to scrutinise and correct them. "If someone dies or gets married, should their name not be removed? If someone migrates from outside, should their name not be added? Yet they persist in blaming the Election Commission," he said.
Vij pointed out that the law mandates a one-month window for objections after every revision. He contended that parties levelling allegations "either lack ground-level workers or are simply incompetent", urging them to go door-to-door to educate people about the updated lists. The exercise is being undertaken after a gap of 23 years, a period during which many voters have died, married, or been transferred, he noted.
"Ensuring one person, one vote is the Election Commission's constitutional mandate, and it is discharging its duty," Vij said. "These are people who failed to do their own work properly and now cannot tolerate others doing theirs."
