Vijayendra justifies comparing Indira Gandhi to Hitler

Bengaluru, June 26 (UNI) BJP Karnataka President Vijayendra Yediyurappa today defended the party’s controversial social media post comparing former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to Adolf Hitler, stating that it was a "hard truth" reflecting the reality of the Emergency era.
Speaking to reporters, Vijayendra said, “It was the 50th year—the day when Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister, enforced Emergency in this country. So it’s quite natural that this issue is being discussed across the country, not just in Karnataka or the BJP. We have rightly compared Shrimati Indira Gandhi to Hitler. What’s wrong in that?”
He accused the Congress of reacting out of political insecurity. “The entire country, entire world knows how Indira Gandhi, to save her seat as Prime Minister, collapsed the democratic system. Senior leaders from Sangh Parivar were jailed, the media was muzzled, and dissent was crushed. This is not fiction—it’s documented history,” he said.
Vijayendra also took a direct swipe at Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who had condemned the BJP’s post and backed the FIR filed against it. “Probably DK Shivakumar is not even aware of what happened during the Emergency. He should go back and study the history. It was a dark chapter that everyone acknowledges globally,” Vijayendra said.
Reacting to the FIR registered against the BJP Karnataka unit for the controversial tweet, he said it reflected the Congress party's inability to accept historical facts. “If the Congress government can’t tolerate the truth, that’s their problem,” he asserted.
On Wednesday, June 25, the Congress had filed a complaint against the BJP Karnataka Twitter handle for its post equating Indira Gandhi with Hitler. The move triggered a political storm, with state Congress leaders accusing the BJP of deliberately spreading hatred and distorting history.
The BJP, however, stood its ground, calling the Emergency a “black mark on Indian democracy” and reiterating that its comparison was historically accurate and ideologically justified. UNI BDN SSP
