West Indies unveil ODI and T20I squads for India tour

Antigua, Sep 20 (UNI) Shai Hope will lead West Indies as they prepare for a stern contest in India that will see the two teams compete across three ODIs and five T20Is.
A major feature of the T20I squad is the inclusion of uncapped opener Kamil Pooran, who has been added on the back of impressive returns in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League 2026 season.

Pooran has amassed 273 runs from eight innings, at a strike rate of 159.64.
Meanwhile, Quentin Sampson, who featured for the West Indies at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year, has also been recalled to the squad.
Adding to the batting firepower will be Shimron Hetmyer, who will join the team for the five T20Is. A major absentee in both squads is experienced all-rounder Jason Holder, who has been rested for the tour.
Meanwhile, John Campbell, who missed the final two ODIs of the recent series against New Zealand, returns to the ODI setup.
His presence will add to the squad as the West Indies look to build momentum ahead of next year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, according to ICC.
The Windies, currently ranked 10th in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings, will be unable to secure an early ticket for next year’s marquee event as the cycle for automatic qualification comes to an end after the second ODI against India.
However, head coach Daren Sammy believes the series presents an incredible opportunity for his team as they prepare for next year’s tournament.
“Playing against the top team in the world presents us with a chance to fine tune and improve our performances as an ODI team which has seen quality performances across the cycle,” Sammy said.
“The series also creates a valuable platform to assess players who are stepping into important roles for this series with a long-term target of competing in the World Cup in 2027.”
In addition, the five-match T20I series will see the West Indies team lock horns against the team they faced in a high-octane fixture at this year’s Men’s T20 World Cup. Sammy sees the upcoming fixtures as an equal stepping stone on their way to the next T20 World Cup in 2028.
“We are looking to build on the momentum from our series win against Sri Lanka, with the long-term goal of developing a strong core of players ahead of the next T20 World Cup,” he said.
“The challenge of playing against the World Champions at home will provide valuable preparation, allowing us to continue improving and developing both individually and as a collective unit.”
The two teams will square off in the first ODI on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram.
