Yoga Day celebrated with enthusiasm across West Bengal

Kolkata, June 21 (UNI) The International Day of Yoga was celebrated across West Bengal on Saturday with participants from all walks of life performing asanas at public parks and community grounds, reaffirming the unifying power of this ancient practice.

In Kolkata, early morning yoga sessions were organised at several prominent locations, including Rabindra Sarobar, Eco Park, and the lawns near the iconic Victoria Memorial. Despite intermittent light showers in parts of the city, a large number of yoga enthusiasts, senior citizens, school students, and office-goers joined the sessions with remarkable zeal and discipline.

This year’s theme, 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health', resonated widely across all events.

Governor CV Ananda Bose observed Yoga Day at Raj Bhavan. He wrote on his X handle: “It is a matter of pride and joy that our ancient practice of yoga has emerged as a symbol of global bond, bringing together people across boundaries. What once was a personal journey is now a universal connection — uniting hearts, minds and nations through timeless wisdom.”

Similar scenes unfolded across Siliguri and other parts of north Bengal, where yoga events were held in tea gardens, schools, and even on the banks of the Mahananda river. In Darjeeling, yoga was practised against the picturesque backdrop of the hills, adding serenity to the wellness routines.

In rural areas, local clubs and self-help groups took the lead in organising community yoga events. Many of these sessions were accompanied by awareness drives focused on health and wellness, spreading the message of holistic living.

Several private schools and colleges also marked the occasion with yoga practice sessions and expert talks delivered by trained yoga instructors.

“Yoga is recognised as an effective tool for fostering unity of minds, unity of healthy lifestyle goals, unity in thought, unity in understanding. Yoga has emerged as an effective instrument for fostering global peace, harmony and wellness,” the Governor wrote.

While the West Bengal government did not host any centralised event, multiple departments lent support to local-level programmes through civic bodies and educational institutions.

State BJP chief and Union minister Sukanta Majumdar took to social media, saying, “Let us all come together to make yoga a mass movement. A movement that leads the world toward peace, health, and harmony… Where Yoga for One Earth, One Health becomes a global resolve.”

Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari participated in a yoga session at the Indian Museum premises along with fellow BJP Bengal MLAs.

“It is a proud moment for Raj Bhavan, Kolkata, to be part of YOGA SANGAM 2025… in a collective movement for health, harmony and holistic wellbeing,” said an official statement.
