2027 Assembly Elections: BJP faces challenge of balancing alliance partners’ expectations

Vidya Shankar Rai
Lucknow, Oct 25 (UNI) Amidst preparations for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is facing mounting pressure from its alliance partners over seat-sharing arrangements.
Beyond contending with opposition parties, the BJP now faces the additional challenge of balancing the expectations of its own coalition partners. Allies including the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), Nishad Party, Apna Dal (S), and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) are staking claims for a larger number of seats compared to the previous election.
Om Prakash Rajbhar’s Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) has indicated that it has shortlisted around 30 seats, including some currently held by the BJP. In the previous Assembly elections, the SBSP contested 19 seats as part of its alliance with the Samajwadi Party and won six. Since then, the party has sought to expand its political footprint and is now preparing to contest a larger number of seats in the upcoming elections.
The BJP has yet to provide any definitive indication regarding the distribution of seats within the alliance. However, party sources suggest that it will not be easy to entirely disregard the demands of its allies.
The BJP faces a dual challenge: it must reserve a sufficient number of seats for its own organization and strong candidates, while simultaneously ensuring a respectable share for its alliance partners to keep them on board.
According to senior BJP sources, the party’s allies may stake claims for approximately 60 to 80 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections. This includes demands to field candidates in certain constituencies currently held by the BJP. The parties within the alliance are seeking to strengthen their claims by highlighting their respective social and regional influence.
Along with the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), the Nishad Party is also seeking to increase its share of seats. While the Nishad Party has previously been part of an alliance with the BJP, its political standing is different this time around. Meanwhile, Apna Dal (S) also expects a larger number of seats compared to the past; in the 2022 assembly elections, the party contested 18 seats and won 12.
Essentially, the allied parties are focused on securing as many seats as possible in regions where they hold influence. They argue that being given the opportunity to contest in areas where they have a strong social base would ultimately benefit the entire alliance.
The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), too, is seeking a larger share of seats, citing its political influence in western Uttar Pradesh. In the 2022 Assembly elections, the party contested 33 seats as part of the Samajwadi Party-led alliance and won eight.
Now, having joined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the RLD aims to further strengthen its influence in Western Uttar Pradesh, with its sights set on areas such as Agra, Aligarh, Mathura, and Hathras.
Recently, during an event in Kirawali (Agra), RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary—without explicitly naming any specific constituency—hinted at the need for an increased number of seats. This is being interpreted as a sign of the party’s growing aspirations within the alliance.
Apna Dal (S) is also preparing to increase its share for the upcoming elections. Having contested 18 seats and won 12 in 2022, the party maintains that it should be allocated more seats in its strongholds.
Meanwhile, seat-sharing negotiations have begun among the BJP’s alliance partners, with each party putting forward its demands based on past electoral performance, social support and previous election data.
According to political analysts, the BJP’s biggest challenge will be to strike a balance in seat allocation by accommodating its allies’ demands while retaining enough seats for its own organisational base and strong candidates.
To effectively counter opposition parties, the BJP needs to strengthen its organization down to the booth level, while also keeping its alliance partners united. Given this, discussions regarding seat-sharing are likely to intensify in the coming days.
Currently, the allies are exerting pressure by presenting their respective demands. The BJP’s strategy will focus on determining how many seats to allocate to each ally and which constituencies the party should contest itself. This exercise in seat-sharing, which takes place before the formal announcement of elections, is also likely to provide a clearer picture of the power dynamics within the alliance.
BJP state spokesperson Avnish Tyagi said seat-sharing would not be an issue, adding that the party’s senior leaders would resolve the matter amicably while ensuring that all alliance partners’ interests and dignity are respected.
