Argentina will ‘take matters into our own hands’ over Falklands:Milei tears into UN

New York, Sep 24 (UNI) Argentine President Javier Milei launched a blistering attack on the United Nations at the 81st General Assembly on Wednesday, branding it a “useless organisation” and warning that Argentina would no longer wait for the world body to act over the Falkland Islands, which Buenos Aires calls the Malvinas.
In a combative address, Milei accused the UN of failing to enforce its own resolutions over the long-running sovereignty dispute with Britain and said Argentina would act against what it considers the unauthorised exploitation of natural resources around the islands.
“Malvinas is for us a national cause,” Milei told world leaders, accusing the UN of having “decided to look the other way” over the dispute and the development of the Sea Lion offshore oil project in the North Falkland Basin.
“Argentina is not going to sit around waiting for the UN and the international community to live up to their own mandate. We’re going to take matters into our own hands,” he said.
Milei said Argentina would “not remain indifferent to those who exploit resources under illegal foreign occupation”, describing the Sea Lion project as an “unlawful act” because it is being pursued under British licences that Argentina rejects.
“What use is a resolution if for decades the other party can act in direct contravention of it?” he asked, arguing that the problem was not a lack of UN resolutions but the absence of consequences for violating them.
“There is no shortage of words or resolution, but what is lacking is consequences,” he said. “Because an institution that cannot ensure that its words carry weight in the real world loses the most important thing of all: its authority.”
The Argentine government has already launched sanctions proceedings against more than 60 companies and individuals linked to the offshore oil project and has submitted legislation to Congress aimed at strengthening penalties over activities involving natural resources in areas claimed by Argentina.
Milei said the Falklands dispute is also a test of the UN's ability to uphold its own decisions.
“That’s why the Malvinas are not merely an issue between Argentina and the United Kingdom. They also raise a question regarding the ability of this organisation to enforce its own resolutions,” he said.
He called on Britain to return to negotiations on the sovereignty dispute, while rejecting the applicability of the principle of self-determination to the islands' population.
“We call on the United Kingdom to resume negotiations with a view to finding a peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute as required by international law,” Milei said.
The dispute dates back decades and erupted into war in 1982 after Argentine forces invaded the islands. The 74-day conflict ended with Argentina's surrender and left 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel and three Falkland Islanders dead.
Milei's attack extended far beyond the Falklands. He accused the UN of having abandoned its founding purposes and allowing what he described as “chaos, violence and international terrorism to flourish”.
He said the organisation had become “a useless organization” serving “a caste of fatally arrogant parasites disguised as well-intentioned bureaucrats”, and described the UN as a “bureaucratic leviathan” combining “anarchy and tyranny”.
Milei also criticised the international response to the Covid-19 pandemic, calling it “a global experiment in social control disguised as science” and arguing that international institutions had imposed excessive restrictions on national governments.
He linked Argentina's decision to leave the World Health Organization to his broader opposition to what he considers excessive international intervention.
A major part of his speech was devoted to artificial intelligence, which Milei presented as an opportunity for Argentina to expand its economic influence.
“Where many see a threat, we see a new frontier,” he said, arguing that AI could transform productivity, medicine, education and governance.
Invoking economist Adam Smith's famous pin-factory example, Milei described AI as potentially “the pin factory of the 21st century” and called for an approach based on investment and innovation rather than what he described as premature regulation.
“In the face of uncertainty, we propose determination,” he said. “In the face of fear, courage. In the face of decline, ambition.”
Milei said Argentina would seek to position itself at the forefront of AI development by leveraging its energy resources, critical minerals, food production and technological talent.
“Argentina will stand at the forefront of freedom,” he declared, saying AI development should remain anchored in Western values including “respect for life, liberty, private property, and the notion of human dignity.”
The Argentine president also reaffirmed his government's geopolitical alignment, saying Buenos Aires had “unequivocally aligned” itself with the West, the United States and Israel. He condemned Iranian attacks against Israel and reiterated Argentina's position on the 1992 and 1994 terrorist attacks in the country.
Turning back to Argentina's economic ambitions, Milei said his government had rejected decades of what he described as economic decline and was opening the country to trade and investment.
“We've already lost too much. We do not want to lose it again,” he said.
“We're opening our economy up to trade and investment,” he added, highlighting Argentina's energy, critical minerals, food and technology sectors.
