At least 109 migrants dead after boat capsizes off Djibouti: IOM

Addis Ababa, Oct 11 (UNI) At least 109 migrants, including 15 children, have died and more than 116 remain missing after a boat carrying about 350 people capsized off the coast of Djibouti, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Sunday.
The boat was travelling from Djibouti to Yemen when it capsized overnight between Thursday and Friday, the UN migration agency said, adding that local authorities are continuing search and rescue operations.
“This is a devastating loss of life. Our thoughts are with the survivors and the families who have lost loved ones or remain without news of their relatives,” said Alexandre Coissac, IOM chief of mission in Djibouti.
The bodies recovered included 52 men, 42 women and 15 children, while more than 80 people survived the shipwreck. All the survivors were Ethiopian nationals, the IOM said.
IOM teams are working with local authorities to provide emergency assistance, while medical care is being provided to survivors and arrangements are being made for the dignified burial of those who died, the agency said.
The disaster highlights the dangers faced by migrants travelling along the Red Sea route from the Horn of Africa towards Yemen and other parts of the Middle East in search of economic opportunities.
