Bangladesh to receive consignment of 18 modern Indian-made railway coaches

Darshana, Oct 16 (UNI) Bangladesh is set to receive a consignment of 18 modern broad-gauge railway coaches from India, with the shipment expected to enter the country through Darshana International Railway Station in Chuadanga district.
The coaches, supplied under an agreement between Bangladesh Railway and India's Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES), were set to arrive on Friday, before being transported to the Saidpur Railway Workshop for inspection following customs clearance.
Mamunur Rashid, station manager at Darshana International Railway Station, told the Dhaka Tribune that the coaches were manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, Punjab, and dispatched to Bangladesh on October 12.
The shipment comprises three air-conditioned sleeper coaches, three air-conditioned chair cars, 11 non-air-conditioned chair cars and one power car.
Rashid said the coaches would undergo mandatory inspections and technical assessments at Saidpur before being prepared for integration into passenger train services.
Announcing the dispatch earlier this week, RITES said the shipment marked another milestone in its export operations, highlighting Indian manufacturing and cross-border railway connectivity.
India resumed supplying passenger coaches to Bangladesh in August after a gap of nearly a decade, when an initial batch of 19 modern broad-gauge coaches arrived through the Darshana border. Those coaches were part of Bangladesh Railway's procurement programme for 200 passenger coaches launched in 2022.
The modernisation project, intended to improve the efficiency and reliability of passenger services, particularly in south-western Bangladesh and along routes using the Padma Rail Bridge, is estimated to cost Tk 1,704.66 crore (approximately $138 million). Around Tk 1,331 crore ($108 million) is expected to be financed through a European Investment Bank loan.
