Bengali film actress Mithu Mukherjee dead

Mumbai/Kolkata, Sep 21 (UNI) Yesteryear’s Bengali actress Mithu Mukherjee, who combined raw physical appeal with a sweet face and graceful performances, died at a private hospital here following a prolonged battle with cancer, hospital and film industry sources said on Monday.
Mukherjee, 71, breathed her last on Sunday night. Born in Kolkata on June 19, 1955, she had been undergoing treatment for cancer for nearly a year.
Debuting in the Bengali film industry as a teenager with Chitta Bose’s Shesh Parba in 1971, Mukherjee acted in over 20 films during a comparatively short film career spanning less than two decades.
She gained wide recognition playing Marjina in Dinen Gupta’s Marjina Abdulla two years later. Her dancing and acting skills were among the prime factors behind the film — based on the Arabian Nights classic Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves — turning out to be a blockbuster.
Mukherjee played leading roles in several well-known Bengali films, including the rollicking comedy Mouchak (1974), opposite Ranjit Mallick. Bengal’s greatest matinee idol Uttam Kumar also featured in the film. She also worked with Uttam Kumar in Hotel Snow Fox.
Her other popular Bengali movies included Swayamsiddha (1975), Sandhi (1980) and Ashrita (1990).
She also made her mark in Hindi cinema, making her debut with Dulal Guha’s Khaan Dost in 1976.
Mukherjee subsequently appeared in films such as Basu Chatterjee’s Safed Jhooth, Dillagi and Do Ladke Dono Kadke.
News of her death prompted tributes from members of the film fraternity. The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) paid tribute to the actress, recalling her contribution to Indian cinema.
The Bengali film fraternity expressed shock and grief.
Ranjit Mallick, in a video on Instagram, spoke about the shock he felt on hearing of Mukherjee’s death, who was significantly younger than him.
“At first, I even thought the report might be incorrect, as one naturally resists believing such sudden news of a death upon first hearing it.”
Prosenjit Chatterjee said her memories and body of work “will continue to remain alive among audiences”. Another leading Bengali actor, Jeet, also condoled Mukherjee’s demise. UNI AAA/NST/SSP CDS
