Benjamin Bonzi upsets ninth seed Daniil Medvedev

London, June 30 (UNI) France’s Benjamin Bonzi pulled off the first major upset of Wimbledon 2025, defeating ninth seed and former Nitto ATP Finals champion Daniil Medvedev 7-6(2), 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 in a dramatic first-round clash today.
Competing in sweltering conditions on the hottest opening day in Wimbledon history, according to the UK Met Office, the World No. 64 held his nerve and showcased a balanced game of power and control to register the biggest Grand Slam win of his career.
Medvedev, currently 16th in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, entered the match under pressure after a disappointing Grand Slam season. The loss follows a second-round defeat to teenager Learner Tien at the Australian Open and a first-round exit at Roland Garros against Cameron Norrie, marking a troubling trend for the former US Open champion.
Despite taking the second set, the Russian struggled to counter Bonzi’s consistency from the baseline and relentless serving. Bonzi dominated the tie-breaks in the first and third sets before racing through the fourth.
The win marks Bonzi’s second career Top 10 victory and improves his record against Medvedev to 2-0. The Frenchman has now reached the Wimbledon second round for the third time in his career. Medvedev, by contrast, failed to progress past the first round at SW19 for the first time in seven appearances.
Bonzi, who spent three hours and seven minutes on court, will next face Australia’s Jordan Thompson in the second round. UNI BDN SSP
