Congress calls ECI’s fresh SIR relaxation tacit admission of wrongful voter deletions, demands Gyanesh Kumar’s exit

New Delhi, Nov 6 (UNI) The Congress on Friday accused the Election Commission of India of tacitly admitting that eligible voters had been wrongfully excluded during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with the poll panel issuing yet another set of instructions to provide voters left out of the draft rolls in seven states and union Territories an opportunity to secure their inclusion in the final lists.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh described the latest directive as yet another U-turn by the Election Commission, alleging that its repeated corrective measures had exposed serious flaws in the revision exercise and vindicated the Opposition's concerns over the exclusion of genuine voters.
"Another day, yet another U-turn," Ramesh said in a post on social media platform X, reacting to the Commission's latest instructions.
He said the directive amounted to a belated acknowledgement that voters had been wrongly excluded under the ASDD (Absent, Shifted, Dead and Duplicate) classification.
According to him, the Commission had been forced to undertake successive corrections in the face of mounting public anger and protests over the SIR exercise.
"The ECI is carrying out corrective after corrective after the nation-wide outrage and anger over SIR which has robbed over 13 crore Indians of their constitutional right to vote," Ramesh alleged.
Questioning the manner in which the revision had been conducted, the Congress leader said the repeated amendments raised serious questions about the methodology adopted by the Commission and the hardships inflicted on ordinary electors.
He also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah of being politically responsible for what he described as an attempt to manipulate electoral rolls.
Describing the SIR as the latest manifestation of "Vote Chori", Ramesh alleged that the Election Commission and the Modi-Shah leadership were now attempting to contain the damage after the exercise had triggered widespread controversy and public scrutiny.
The Congress has consistently challenged the methodology adopted for the SIR, particularly the classification of electors as absent, shifted, dead or duplicate, arguing that the exercise risks removing legitimate voters from electoral rolls. The party has repeatedly demanded transparency in the deletion process, accountability for wrongful exclusions and effective safeguards to ensure that eligible citizens are not deprived of their voting rights.
The latest instructions follow the Commission's decision to provide additional opportunities to electors whose names were missing from the draft rolls in seven states and union Territories to establish their eligibility and seek inclusion in the final electoral lists. The move has once again brought the conduct of the SIR into the centre of the political confrontation between the Congress and the poll panel.
Ramesh said the successive corrective measures had only reinforced the Congress's two principal demands: that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar must step down and that the ongoing SIR exercise must be suspended.
The Congress has maintained that the revision of electoral rolls is a legitimate exercise only when conducted transparently and without disenfranchising eligible citizens. It has accused the Commission of failing to provide adequate safeguards against wrongful deletions and insisted that no genuine voter should be forced to fight an administrative battle to retain the constitutional right to vote.
