Egypt’s Sisi seeks parliamentary approval for possible military support to Saudi Arabia

Cairo, Oct 17 (UNI) Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Saturday called for an emergency parliamentary session to authorise him to take defensive measures in support of Saudi Arabia if requested by the kingdom, as regional tensions threaten security and international shipping routes.
Egypt’s parliament will convene on Sunday at 1 pm local time (1000 GMT) to consider the request, state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper reported, citing a parliamentary statement.
Speaking at a graduation ceremony at the Egyptian Military Academy in the New Administrative Capital, Sisi said Cairo would take all necessary measures to protect Saudi Arabia if Riyadh sought assistance, in line with the directives of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
He said attacks targeting Saudi Arabia undermined both Arab and Egyptian national security and stressed Egypt’s rejection of any threat to the kingdom’s security and stability.
Sisi also warned against threats to the security of the Red Sea and international shipping lanes, calling for efforts to protect maritime routes and prevent further escalation in the region.
He expressed gratitude for what he described as the historic support Egypt had received from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.
Saudi Arabia has faced attacks by Yemen’s Houthi group amid renewed fighting in the country, where a truce that had largely held since 2022 collapsed in July, according to the account provided.
Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in September 2014. Saudi Arabia led a military coalition that intervened in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognised Yemeni government.
In a separate announcement during Saturday’s ceremony, Sisi said he would not seek to remain in office after his current presidential term expires in 2030, describing the matter as settled.
“The period leading up to 2030 will be the end of my term as president of the state, if I am still alive. This is completely settled and there will be no discussion about it,” he said, adding that the Egyptian constitution would not be amended.
Sisi, 71, a former army general who became president in 2014, said the period leading up to 2030 would be used to prepare a new generation of leaders.
He said the Military Academy was training hundreds of prospective officials, ministers and presidential candidates in governance and leadership.
