INDIA Bloc to hold ‘public impeachment’ of CEC Gyanesh Kumar on Oct 30

New Delhi, Oct 28 (UNI) The INDIA opposition bloc will hold a “public impeachment” of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi on Friday, October 30, after being denied permission to use other venues, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh announced on Wednesday, accusing the head of the Election Commission of undermining the Constitution and systematically eroding the foundations of India’s electoral democracy.
In a post on the social media platform X, Ramesh said the programme would be held at 3.30 pm at 10, Rajaji Marg. “Having been denied other locations, the INDIA janbandhan will be holding a public impeachment of Gyanesh Kumar at 10, Rajaji Marg, New Delhi at 3.30 pm on Friday Oct 30, 2026,” he said.
Mounting a sharp attack on the Chief Election Commissioner, Ramesh alleged that Kumar had “demonstrably violated the letter and spirit of the Constitution” and “systematically subverted the very foundations of our electoral democracy”.
He also accused the CEC of having “lied to the Supreme Court”, describing him as “the willing executioner on behalf of the Diabolical Duo whose turn will come next”. The remark appeared to signal that the opposition intends to widen its campaign beyond the Election Commission to target the union government’s leadership.
The proposed demonstration marks a further escalation in the INDIA bloc’s confrontation with the Election Commission over the conduct of electoral processes, particularly the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have repeatedly questioned the transparency and implementation of the exercise, alleging that the deletion or exclusion of eligible voters could undermine their constitutional right to vote. They have also demanded greater accountability from the poll panel and questioned its impartiality in the management of elections.
The opposition’s decision to organise a “public impeachment” is a political demonstration and does not constitute a formal constitutional proceeding to remove the CEC. Under the Constitution, the Chief Election Commissioner enjoys protection against removal comparable to that of a Supreme Court judge.
The CEC can be removed only through the prescribed parliamentary process on grounds of proved misbehaviour or incapacity, following the procedure applicable to a SC judge. A public event or political declaration cannot, by itself, remove the incumbent from office.
The announcement comes amid a broader opposition campaign seeking changes in the functioning of the Election Commission and greater transparency in electoral administration. INDIA bloc leaders have stepped up their criticism of Kumar over the handling of electoral rolls and the SIR exercise, arguing that the credibility of elections depends on the independence and impartiality of the constitutional body entrusted with conducting them.
Friday’s programme is expected to provide the opposition with another platform to press its allegations against Kumar and mobilise political support for its demand for accountability. The choice of the term “public impeachment” underscores the bloc’s attempt to turn its confrontation with the CEC into a wider political campaign, even as the formal constitutional mechanism for removal remains distinct from the proposed demonstration.
