India eye series-clinching win at Wellington

Wellington, Oct 26 (UNI) India have one hand on the five-match T20I series, but the job is not quite finished. The visitors will look to turn their 2-0 advantage into an unassailable lead when they meet New Zealand in the third T20I at Hnry Stadium here on Tuesday, while the hosts face the unenviable task of stopping a side that has found a way to win even when the odds appeared stacked against it.
The first two matches have offered a useful lesson in the difference between making a match competitive and finishing it off. New Zealand have had their moments, particularly with the bat and through Mitchell Santner's spin, but India have shown greater composure when the contest has entered its decisive phase.
That ability to keep one's head when the game begins to turn is often what separates a winning side from one that merely threatens to win.
India's opening victory was built around a successful chase of 226, their highest in men's T20I cricket. Sanju Samson's 67 provided the innings with its impetus, while contributions from Shreyas Iyer and Naman Dhir ensured that the asking rate did not become an insurmountable burden. It was an impressive demonstration of batting depth, but also a reminder that a successful chase requires more than one batter to take responsibility.
The second encounter presented a different examination. India were reduced to 70 for five while chasing 181, and suddenly the advantage they had carried into the match appeared to be slipping away. New Zealand had applied pressure through Santner's spin, and the Indian top order had been unable to establish a foundation.
Yet Tilak Varma's unbeaten 51 off 26 deliveries, supported by Nitish Kumar Reddy, turned the contest around. Their unbroken seventh-wicket partnership of 69 runs demonstrated that India possess the temperament to recover from difficult situations. Naman Dhir's brisk 31 had also proved important in keeping the chase alive.
For New Zealand, the lesson is fairly straightforward: taking wickets is only half the task. The opposition must also be prevented from rebuilding. Having India five down and still allowing them to cross the finish line will have been particularly frustrating for the home side.
The hosts will also have to contend with personnel concerns. Experienced fast bowler Matt Henry has been ruled out of the remaining T20Is, while Lockie Ferguson is unavailable for the Wellington match. Their absence leaves New Zealand with less experience and fewer established options in the pace department at a time when they can ill afford another setback.
India, too, have a selection issue to address. Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of the third match with a right adductor strain, forcing the team management to consider its top-order combination. Kumar Kushagra remains with the squad as cover.
The visitors will nevertheless take confidence from the form of their middle order. Tilak has demonstrated that he can accelerate without losing control of the innings, while Nitish offers both batting depth and a useful seam-bowling option. Such flexibility becomes particularly valuable in T20 cricket, where a single over can change the complexion of a match.
For New Zealand, Glenn Phillips remains a key figure. His 70 in the second game, alongside Bevon Jacobs' 58, helped the hosts post 180 for five. However, a competitive total is only as good as the bowling that follows it. The inability to defend that score will concern Santner, who will need his seamers to provide early breakthroughs and his fielders to convert pressure into wickets.
Santner himself could once again be central to the contest. His four-wicket haul in the second match demonstrated how effectively he can use changes of pace and trajectory to disrupt a batting line-up. India's batters will need to resist the temptation to manufacture shots against him and instead look for scoring opportunities without handing him inexpensive wickets.
At the same time, India will hope that their own bowlers can restrict Phillips and the New Zealand middle order during the crucial middle overs. Arshdeep Singh's ability to strike at important moments and the spin options available to India could prove significant if the hosts are again required to build their innings under pressure.
Wellington brings a fresh challenge. The conditions at Hnry Stadium may offer assistance to seamers with the new ball, while wind and the possibility of rain could influence bowling plans and fielding. The toss could therefore assume some importance, although neither captain will want to place too much faith in conditions when execution remains the decisive factor.
India are expected to retain the core of their winning combination, with the team management having to settle on the batting order following Kishan's absence. New Zealand, meanwhile, must find a workable pace combination without Henry and Ferguson and will need greater consistency from their remaining bowlers.
The likely battle is between India's depth and New Zealand's determination to strike early. If the visitors avoid another top-order collapse, their ability to recover and accelerate late in the innings could again give them the advantage. But if Santner and the seamers can expose the Indian middle order before it settles, the contest could become far tighter than the series score suggests.
India will start as favourites, and deservedly so, having won both matches despite facing different challenges. But T20 cricket has little patience for complacency. One exceptional spell, one substantial partnership or a couple of missed chances can alter the direction of a game in minutes.
For New Zealand, Tuesday is about keeping the series alive. For India, it is about converting a commanding position into a decisive result. The visitors have shown that they can win from difficult situations; now they will look to demonstrate that they can also finish a series without allowing the opposition a way back.
The third T20I is scheduled to begin at 12.30 pm IST (8 pm local time) on Tuesday.
