Iran awaits ‘definitive’ US response on Hormuz reopening offer despite Trump's rejection

New York, Sep 27 (UNI) Iran said on Sunday it is awaiting a “definitive” US response through mediators on its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, despite President Donald Trump rejecting the offer as “unacceptable”.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran has received Trump’s public reaction but had yet to receive a formal response through the mediators, leaving the door open for further diplomatic discussions.
“We saw the first reaction from the US president, but nothing has been conveyed to us from the mediators yet,” Araghchi said.
Under the Iranian proposal, the strategically vital waterway could be reopened within seven days and nuclear talks resumed if Washington met certain conditions, including lifting its naval blockade and waiving sanctions on Iranian oil.
“Of course, the US president has also said many good things and also many contradictory things, which unfortunately we hear a lot from him. We are waiting for the definitive opinions to be conveyed to us by the mediators and we will make a decision based on that,” Araghchi added.
Trump on Saturday rejected the proposal, saying Tehran wanted a deal to reopen the strait because it was “losing so badly”.
“They want to make a deal, and I think that’s fine. I like making a deal too, but that deal would not be acceptable,” Trump said.
The comments came after a week of diplomatic activity in New York, where senior Iranian officials attended the UN General Assembly and held contacts with US officials, but no concrete agreement emerged.
Araghchi said the conditions attached to Iran’s proposal were “nothing more” than those contained in a US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding signed in June, which collapsed shortly afterwards amid renewed fighting.
“If the necessary conditions are met, the strait can be reopened, a normal maritime passage restored within seven days. The choice now rests with the United States,” Araghchi told reporters.
“You cannot bomb a country, threaten its annihilation, impose a maritime blockade, and coercive measures, and expect automatic restoration of security and navigation,” he said.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also cautioned that any agreement would require prolonged negotiations.
“If there’s going to be a deal with Iran…it’s going to involve a lot of hard work over a period of time,” Rubio said earlier this week.
In his UN General Assembly address, Trump said he faced a choice between reaching a deal that would allow Iran to rebuild and “annihilate the Islamic Republic” to prevent it from threatening other countries.
There are reports that President Donald Trump is considering a resumption of military airstrikes against Iran following the November 2026 midterm elections. UNI AAB SAS
