Iran reviewing US proposals for talks, says preconditions must be met

Tehran, Oct 12 (UNI) Iran is reviewing US proposals for negotiations as the two countries continue to exchange messages through mediators, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on Monday, stressing that Tehran's preconditions must be met before any talks can take place.
"The exchange of messages between Iran and the US through mediators continues," Baqaei told during a weekly news conference, adding that Pakistan and Qatar continued to facilitate contacts between the two sides.
"We are reviewing the Americans' proposals for negotiations. Iran's preconditions must be observed for any negotiations," he said.
Baqaei also acknowledged Russia's role in Iran's nuclear diplomacy, describing Moscow's involvement as "constructive" and pointing to its participation in the 2015 nuclear agreement.
He said relations between Tehran and Moscow are based on mutual trust and that Iran welcomed supportive efforts by friendly countries. However, he stressed that Pakistan and Qatar remained the principal mediators in the current exchanges between Tehran and Washington.
On the Strait of Hormuz, Baqaei blamed the continuing tensions on US and Israeli attacks on Iran and rejected suggestions that Tehran is using the strategic waterway to gain leverage in negotiations.
"What we have seen in the Strait of Hormuz since February 28 is the direct result of the US and the Israeli regime's attack on Iran," he said.
"With the current US approach, security will not return," he added.
Baqaei also dismissed US assertions that Iran has lost its leverage, saying Washington's claims did not reflect realities on the ground.
"They can say Iran has lost its leverage, but we are doing our work," he said, arguing that developments in energy markets did not support the US position.
Baqaei also expressed "deep concern" over continuing tensions on the Arabian Peninsula and said Tehran is prepared to help facilitate dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthi movement.
"We do not want war and hostilities to continue between two Islamic countries," he said.
He added that Iran's consultations with regional countries are ongoing and that Tehran has repeatedly offered to support dialogue and a peaceful settlement.
