Jaypal Malviya secures India’s first LA 2028 shooting quota

Doha (Qatar), Nov 6 (UNI) Jaypal Malviya won the silver medal in the men’s 10m air pistol event
at the ISSF World Championship 2026 here to secure India’s first LA 2028 Olympics quota in shooting.

The Indian shooter finished with a total of 242.2, finishing behind the People’s Republic of China’s Hu Kai, who scored 243.9 on Thursday. Olympian Jindřich Dubový of Czechia bagged bronze with 220.9, according to olympics.com.
Earlier, Jaypal Malviya entered the men’s 10m air pistol final after finishing third in qualification with a total of 585-23x.

India’s Kamaljeet and Ravin Kumar missed out on the final after finishing 18th and 83rd in qualification, respectively. As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective teams at the Olympic Games, athletes’ participation at the LA Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at LA28.
Meanwhile, India’s Manu Bhaker, Suruchi Singh and Sainyam Vij combined to win the silver medal in the women’s 10m air pistol team event.

The Indian trio finished with a combined score of 1738-61x points, seven behind China, who claimed gold with 1745-65x. The Republic of Korea took bronze with 1729-49x.

Bhaker led the Indian trio with 583-21x points, while Suruchi Singh managed 580-24x and Sainyam Vij added 575-16x.

Bhaker qualified for the individual final after finishing third in the qualifiers, while Suruchi Singh followed the two-time Olympic medallists in eighth position.
However, Bhaker and Suruchi Singh both missed out on the podium and failed to secure Olympic quotas for LA 2028.

Bhaker was fifth in the final after scoring 179.9 points and Suruchi Singh finished sixth with a total of 158.3 points.

Olympic medallist Jiang Ranxin of China won gold with 242.4 points, ahead of compatriot Yao Qianxun, who took silver with 242.1. Olympic medallist Veronika Major of Hungary bagged bronze with 222.1.
The two medals on Thursday saw India’s tally in Doha rise to five - one gold and four silver. The ISSF World Championships in Doha is the first major shooting competition which has individual quota places for LA 2028 on offer.
