Kaithal: Wushu coach awarded 10 years' jail, fined Rs 25,000 in rape case

Kaithal, Sep 25 (UNI) A Special Court in Kaithal has sentenced Wushu coach and former sports association secretary Deepak Kumar Lot to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000 for raping a female player after giving her an intoxicant-laced cold drink.
If the fine is not paid, the convict will have to undergo additional punishment.
This matter is of May 2023. Secretary and coach of Wushu Sports Association, Deepak Kumar, called a promising female wushu player to his room. According to the allegation, on May 3, 2023, the coach made the player drink a cold drink mixed with intoxicants and then committed a heinous crime.
The accused had also threatened to kill the victim after the brutality.
It is pertinent to mention that two different female players of Kaithal had filed cases against coach Deepak Kumar in the women's police station - in one case allegations of rape and in the other of molestation were made.
In the second molestation case pending in the court, the victim had recorded the obscene conversation. After the voice sample matches in the forensic investigation, this evidence will prove to be very important in the court in putting the culprit behind the bars.
At present, the final hearing of the rape case took place in the court of Additional Sessions Judge (Special Court) Anupamish Modi.
During the hearing, the defence pleaded for leniency, citing coach Deepak's elderly mother and two daughters. At the same time, the complainant's lawyer Ashok Saini and the government lawyer, citing the seriousness of the crime, demanded the harshest punishment for the culprit.
After hearing both the sides, the court found Deepak Kumar guilty and sentenced him under various sections: IPC Section 376 (rape ): 10 years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 20,000 fine. IPC Section 328 (Giving intoxicating substance): three years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 5,000 fine. IPC Section 506 (Intimidation): Punishment for two years imprisonment.
The court ordered that all the sentences would run concurrently.
Along with this, in view of the deep physical and mental trauma caused to the victim, the court has also recommended that the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) provide financial assistance under the compensation scheme.
After the court's decision, the victim player said that the punishment is very little for such a brutal act. During her childhood, she had dreamed of playing for the country and state, but coach Deepak not only broke her dreams but also ruined her entire game and career forever, she said.
