Minor breach in Champaran embankment near Bagaha as Gandak rises above record flood level

Bagaha (West Champaran), Sep 28 (UNI) A minor breach developed in the Champaran embankment near Bagaha in West Champaran district on Monday night after the water level of the Gandak river rose about 35 cm above its highest-ever flood level of 90.90 metres.
Official sources inform that the breach, caused by sudden erosion, occurred over a stretch of around 10 metres at kilometre 4.00 of the left bank Champaran embankment near Khairtawa village under Bagaha-1 block.
Water is flowing into agricultural fields through the breach and is expected to re-enter the Gandak river near kilometre 9.50 of the embankment, sources said.
The water flow may affect low-lying areas of Agastia, Khairtawa and Chandrapur villages in Bagaha-1 block, besides disrupting connectivity in the affected areas.
The source said that the National Highway-727 is located around three kilometres from the breach site. However, the highway is not expected to be significantly affected as the river discharge in the area is currently receding rapidly.
Meanwhile, a team of the Water Resources Department has reached the site and is carrying out repair and restoration work on the embankment. The West Champaran district administration has also initiated necessary measures and is monitoring the situation.
Further developments are being closely monitored by the concerned departments and district administration, the source states.
