Rahul Gandhi accuses Modi government of ‘criminally destroying’ Tata Group, challenges corporate India to break its silence

New Delhi, Oct 28 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the Narendra Modi government of “criminally destroying” the Tata Group, alleging political pressure on India’s business community and challenging corporate leaders to speak out against what he described as the misuse of power.
In a strongly worded post on X, the Congress leader declared, “Tata is being criminally destroyed, and no business leader dares say a word.”
Questioning the silence of corporate India, he asked, “How long will you stay silent? Until they own you?”
Gandhi asserted that the country’s businesses should not be treated as the personal domain of those in power, stating, “Indian business is not Modi and Shah’s plaything.” Taking a direct swipe at business leaders for their alleged reluctance to challenge the government, he added, “You lack courage. We don't. We will ensure justice for these crimes.”
The remarks mark a sharp escalation in Gandhi’s criticism of the Modi government’s relationship with the corporate sector, bringing the question of business autonomy and alleged political interference into the centre of his political attack. By specifically invoking the Tata Group, one of India’s oldest and most prominent conglomerates, the Congress leader has sought to raise broader questions about the independence of major businesses and the ability of corporate leaders to voice dissent without fear of repercussions.
Gandhi’s message also appeared to be a direct challenge to India’s business leadership to abandon what he portrayed as a culture of silence and publicly articulate its concerns. His reference to the possibility of businesses being brought under the control of those in power underscored his allegation that political influence could undermine corporate independence.
However, Gandhi did not identify the specific government decisions, actions or developments that prompted his accusation against the Tata Group. Nor did his post provide details of the alleged criminal offences or outline the legal or investigative measures through which he intends to pursue what he described as justice.
The intervention comes amid the Congress’s wider criticism of the Modi government over its alleged closeness to powerful corporate interests, with the Opposition repeatedly raising concerns about the concentration of economic power, fair competition and the relationship between political authority and big business. The government and the companies concerned have not been cited in Gandhi’s post as responding to the specific allegations.
By framing the Tata Group issue as a test of corporate courage and accountability, Gandhi has extended his political challenge beyond conventional criticism of government policies to question whether India’s business leaders can speak independently of the political establishment. His declaration that the Congress would “ensure justice for these crimes” signals an intent to keep the issue alive politically, although he has yet to spell out any specific legal action or investigative initiative.
