Turtle Wax eyes India as global manufacturing, supply hub; plans 50 new studios

Bengaluru, Sep 18 (UNI) US-based car-care major Turtle Wax is stepping up its India expansion with plans to add at least 50 more Car Care Studios this year, while simultaneously building the country into a manufacturing and supply base for its global operations, its CEO Laurie King said on Thursday.
The company, which entered India in 2019 and now has more than 110 Car Care Studios, sees significant headroom in the country's evolving car-care and vehicle-appearance market, King said during her India visit to mark Turtle Wax's 80th anniversary.
"We're very excited about car-care appearance exploding in India. We feel like India is just scratching the surface in this marketplace. Turtle Wax has great aspirations to grow as a business and a brand in India," she said.
The planned addition of at least 50 studios this year marks an acceleration of the company's physical expansion, with Turtle Wax looking beyond major metropolitan markets to tap growing demand for organised car-care and professional detailing services.
The company's India strategy, however, extends beyond selling products to Indian consumers, with local manufacturing and supply infrastructure being developed as part of its wider global growth plans.
"India is a growth market for us, but we've also developed local manufacturing in India. It is part of our entire global growth plan," King said.
She said the Indian base would help the company improve its speed-to-market globally and optimise its cost of serving customers.
The company's sourcing model currently combines local manufacturing with imports. Technically complex products such as Pure Bead are currently imported from the United States, executives said.
Turtle Wax is also increasingly looking beyond metros for growth. Around 40 per cent of its studio network is in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, according to company executives.
The company has more than 11 studios in Bengaluru and 13 in Hyderabad, besides a presence across major markets in northern, southern, eastern and western India.
Company spokesperson Dibya Swarup Panigrahi said the expansion into smaller cities reflected the considerable headroom available for organised detailing as consumer spending on vehicle appearance increases.
The company's India strategy also reflects a significant difference in consumer behaviour between India and mature markets such as the US.
While do-it-yourself car care has traditionally been an important part of Turtle Wax's business in other markets, India has a stronger service-driven "do-it-for-me" culture.
King said the company was consequently pursuing both models through its product portfolio and Car Care Studios.
"I don't think you have to choose one or the other. We have a myriad of ways to offer both platforms to consumers," she said.
Professional detailing is emerging as another major focus area for the company, with Turtle Wax working on a detailing academy aimed at creating a stronger community of trained professionals and educating consumers about vehicle care.
"We're embarking on creating a detailing academy, which embraces a community. It's not just about product sales, but about education and continuing to elevate the skill set of the consumer on how to care for their car," King said.
The move comes against the backdrop of a highly fragmented Indian car-care market, where organised detailing chains operate alongside thousands of independent and unorganised operators.
Rather than viewing the unorganised segment purely as competition, King said Turtle Wax saw an opportunity in its specialisation and long history in car care.
"We've been doing core car care as a category for 80 years," she said, pointing to the company's focus on car-care appearance as a key differentiator.
Turtle Wax is targeting consumers across price segments in India, with products starting at below Rs 100 and extending to around Rs 2,500-2,700 for specialised paint, interior and premium car-care applications.
Panigrahi said the portfolio covers basic maintenance products for everyday car owners, problem-solving products such as scratch-care solutions and premium offerings aimed at enthusiasts and professional detailers.
The company also sees the growing premium and luxury vehicle segment as an opportunity for professional detailing services.
Its Car Care Studio network includes larger facilities of around 10,000-15,000 square feet, which executives said can cater to high-end vehicles and customers seeking specialised detailing.
Turtle Wax is simultaneously pushing its premium technology portfolio, including Pure Bead, which the company describes as an advanced polymer-based product.
King said Pure Bead offered durability of more than 100 washes, with the polymer bonding to the vehicle surface and providing chemical resistance.
On sustainability, the company said it was also increasing the use of post-consumer recycled material in its packaging in line with applicable Indian requirements.
Executives said Turtle Wax had moved from 30 per cent post-consumer recycled material last year to 40 per cent this year in accordance with the requirements being followed in India.
The company also offers a waterless wash product aimed at reducing water consumption in vehicle cleaning.
King said India had also influenced the company's approach to consumer engagement, with the country's growing car ownership and enthusiasm for vehicle care providing a different growth environment from its mature US market.
"India has shown us another level of passion," she said, adding that the company had been able to develop and expand its Car Care Studio footprint faster in India because of consumer interest.
Turtle Wax said it had recorded year-on-year growth since entering India in 2019 and remained focused on expanding its reach and distribution.
Asked whether it was considering acquisitions or partnerships with Indian detailing chains, King said the company was always looking at new opportunities but did not disclose any specific plans.
"We're always looking for new ways to grow," she said.
For Turtle Wax, the India opportunity therefore extends beyond the planned addition of 50 studios. The company is seeking to build an integrated ecosystem spanning consumer products, organised detailing, professional training, local manufacturing and supply-chain capabilities, with India increasingly playing a role in its wider global growth strategy.
