US Vice President JD Vance softens stance on Iranian uranium enrichment demands

Washington, Oct 7 (UNI) US Vice President JD Vance seemingly softened his stance regarding Washington's demands over Iranian nuclear ambitions, saying Tehran needed to make a "meaningful" reduction in its enrichment capacity but stopping short of saying it must abandon enrichment altogether.
Uranium enrichment has been a key issue for the US administration, with President Donald Trump and may of his senior officials repeatedly saying Iran must never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.
A day prior to the war's beginning in February, Trump said of Iran's enrichment demands: "They want to enrich a little bit. You don't have to enrich when you have that much oil … I say, no enrichment. Not 20%, 30%. They always want 20%, 30% … They want it for civil. I think it's uncivil."
In April, Trump told CBS News that Tehran had agreed to have its enriched uranium removed from Iran.
However, on Tuesday, Vance said Iran should not "build highly enriched fuel" and should "do something meaningful on their enrichment capacity", appearing to signal a less absolute US position.
Under the Obama-era Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which Trump strongly criticised and withdrew the US unilaterally during his first term, Iran agreed to limit uranium enrichment to 3.75%, with verification by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
After the US withdrawal, Iran steadily expanded its nuclear programme and accumulated uranium enriched to at least 60%, a level technically much closer to weapons-grade material.
"If you don't want a nuclear weapon, then why do you need 60% enriched fuel?" Vance said. "And if you want to show commitment to not building a nuclear weapon, don't build highly enriched fuel."
"I think if they want to show a commitment to not building a nuclear weapon, they would do something meaningful on their enrichment capacity," he continued, adding that the goal was "to prevent the Iranians from having a nuclear weapon".
