2.01 lakh families get Rs two lakhs each assistance under sustained livelihood scheme: Minister

Patna, Mar 17 (UNI) A total of 2.01 lakhs families, earlier engaged in liquor selling business, have been given financial assistance of Rs two lakh each for launching their own ventures to earn livelihood under sustained livelihood scheme rolled out for such families in dry Bihar.
Bihar Rural Development Minister Shrawan Kumar while replying to debate in Assembly on budgetary demand of his department for the financial year 2025-26, said that 2.01 lakh families were given financial assistance of Rs two lakhs each for launching their own ventures to earn their livelihood.
This scheme was launched for those families who were earlier engaged in liquor selling business for livelihood and had no resources to meet their both ends of the day after Bihar was declared a dry state, he added.
Kumar said that a total of 10,63,000 Self Help Groups (SHGs) had been created under "Jeevika" schemes for empowerment of women and making them financially independent.
Delegates of five countries including Indonesia, Philippines, Ethiopia and South Africa would visit Bihar to study successful implementation of "Jeevika" scheme, he added.
The Minister said that 9,78,437 families were engaged in Animal Husbandry sector for earning their livelihood. Similarly, 2,63,000 families were given employment in non agriculture sector, Kumar said.
He said that landless families were being given financial assistance to purchase land for construction of their houses. Bihar was the first state in the country to provide Rs one lakh each to landless families to purchase land for construction of their houses, the Minister added.
Dissatisfied with reply of the Minister, opposition staged walkout from the house. Later, in absence of opposition, the house passed by voice vote, the budgetary demand of Rs 16,093.35 Rural Development department for financial year 2025-26.
