6,000 metric tonnes of illegal coal seized in Meghalaya

Shillong, May 10 (UNI) Authorities in Meghalaya seized about 6,000 metric tonnes of illegal coal dumped outside the officially inventorised coordinates in East Jaintia Hills district, an official said on Saturday.

A joint team headed by an Executive Magistrate from East Jaintia Hills district and personnel from the police department and Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR) raided the area where the coal was dumped.

The coal was seized on the spot by the team and following the seizure, the coal was transported to a Coal India-authorised depot for safe custody.

An FIR has been registered under provisions of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and further investigation is underway.

The seizure was in compliance with the directions from the High Court of Meghalaya and DMR.
