Another Meghalaya student dies of food poisoning in Karnataka’s Malavalli

Shillong, Mar 18 (UNI) The death toll of Meghalaya students in the food poisoning in a Karnataka school rose to two with one more student succumbing at a private hospital in Mysuru.
The 12-year-old victim, reportedly from Nongstoiñ, the district headquarters of Meghalaya West Khasi Hills, died at Apollo Hospital, Mysuru on Monday night.
The incident occurred at Gokul Educational Institution’s residential school in T. Kagepura Village, Mandya district, Karnataka. The first victim, Khrehlang Khongtani, a Class VII student, died on Sunday.
A total of 23 students from Meghalaya were residing at the hostel where the food poisoning incident took place. Following the outbreak, all affected students were promptly hospitalised by the district administration.
“All other 22 students from Meghalaya are in stable condition and are being monitored closely,” a Meghalaya government official said.
The Meghalaya government has dispatched key officials, including Commissioner and Secretary, Home (Police) Department, Cyril V Diengdoh, Inspector of Schools P. Sunn, and Sub-Divisional School Education Officer R. Kharsyntiew, to assist the families and ensure proper coordination with Karnataka authorities
The team met the District Magistrate of Mandya District and also visited the hospital where the students belonging to Meghalaya are being given medical care.
They also visited the residential school where the incident took place and met all the stakeholders. The team will be submitting their report to the Meghalaya Education Department subsequently.
District Magistrate of Mandya, Dr Kumar apprised Diengdoh that the Police investigation is going on in full swing and already three people have been arrested including the school owner and hostel warden.
The senior Medical Officers of the Hospital were also present to brief him on the status of the students from Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has announced a compensation of Rs. 3 lakh each to the next of kin of the two victims.
Sangma also informed that the state government will take care of the medical expenditure of all the ailing children.
