AP: Fishermen stage dharna demanding compensation

Kakinada, June 2 (UNI): Fishermen from Uppada, Moolapeta villages in Pithapuram constituency staged a dharna at Uppada Kothapalli on Monday, demanding a monthly compensation of Rs.11,500 on the lines of their counterparts in Mummidivaram and Yanam areas and fulfilment of their demands.
They raised slogans against the oil companies and also other industries for letting out industrial waste into the sea, polluting waters, and destroying the marine fish wealth.
The fishermen alleged that Reliance, ONGC, SR Gujarat, Divis, Aurobindo companies, besides oil factories, NFCL, Coromandel companies, were releasing industrial wastes into the sea, resulting in the destruction of marine fish all along the coast, and depriving the fishermen of their livelihood.
They demanded that the state and central governments provide Rs.. 50 lakh general insurance coverage to the fishermen if they face any accident while fishing in the sea or while going to dispose of their fish catch.
Their other demands included twenty percent jobs for fishermen in the companies that are releasing their wastes into the sea and sanctioning of loans from DCCB to the fishermen to the extent of Rs.1 lakh to Rs.5 lakhs.
Peddimsetti Venkateswerarao, who led the stir further, demanded that the CSR funds from these companies should be utilized for the welfare of the youth of the fishermen families.
