April cloudburst a serious climate change, delayed monsoon likely: Kiran Johare

Kolhapur, Apr 21 (UNI) The deadly cloudburst that occurred in Seri Bagna area of Ramban district in Jammu and Kashmir on April 20, is a very exceptional and serious indication of climate change, which could lead to delayed arrival of the monsoon this year, according to research findings by a renowned meteorologist.
In a press release on Monday, Prof. Kiran Kumar Johare said cloudburst usually occurs in the Himalayan region between July and September. However, the occurrence of such a severe cloudburst in the month of April, especially in the third week of April, indicates a significant change in the weather system. Both the timing and intensity of cloudbursts in the Himalayas have increased, resulting in a delayed arrival of the 2025 monsoon.
Giving causes of cloudburst, Prof. Johare, who has worked in the Instrumentation and Observational Techniques Division of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, said global warming, mixture of western disturbances and local humid winds, anthropogenic interference, resulted in the cloudbursts and unexpected rainfall.
He said "both the timing and intensity of cloudbursts are increasing, the main reason for which is climate change. The incident that took place in Kashmir on April 20, 2025 is a clear example of how climate change has directly changed the timing of cloudbursts. The Government of India has called for monitoring, science-based analysis, and policy preparedness at the national level, concluding that events that previously occurred only during the pre-monsoon period are now occurring even on the eve of summer".
To provide accurate advance information on cloudbursts and for disaster management and food security, the new network of AI-based Advanced Electronics Doppler Radars in India and Maharashtra will be equipped with cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Programmable Logic Control (PLC), and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).
As a result, accurate information will be obtained by scanning the clouds and measuring the vapor, water and ice particles present even in areas as small as the fingertip, added Prof. Johare. UNI SSS SSP
