Arunachal: Police arrest armed narcotics trafficker after intense gunfire exchange

Itanagar, Mar 23 (UNI) In a high-stakes operation, the Itanagar Capital Police have apprehended a notorious narcotics trafficker after an armed confrontation.
The accused, identified as Rohit (alias Ruhit) Basumatary, was intercepted following a brief but intense gunfire exchange with the police on Saturday evening.
The operation resulted in the seizure of contraband drugs and an illegal firearm, marking a significant breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown on narcotics trafficking in the region.
Acting on credible intelligence inputs, police teams were deployed to intercept a blue Renault vehicle suspected of carrying narcotics. At around 6:15 PM, the suspect was sighted and signaled to stop at a checkpoint. However, instead of complying, he attempted to flee, leading to a high-speed chase that ended in a crash.
Emerging from the wrecked vehicle, the suspect opened fire on the approaching police team. Displaying remarkable restraint and professionalism, the police personnel, led by Itanagar SDPO Kengo Dirchi and the officer-in-charge of Itanagar PS Inspector Khiksi Yangfo, responded with a controlled return fire. The confrontation concluded when the suspect was immobilized with a non-lethal shot to the leg, ensuring his capture without any casualties among police personnel or civilians, Itanagar SP Rohit Rajbir Singh said on Sunday.
A subsequent search of the vehicle, conducted in the presence of magistrates and independent witnesses, led to the recovery of approximately 12 grams of suspected heroin, concealed in a green soap box near the spare tire. Additionally, police seized a sophisticated firearm marked "Made in USA" along with six live rounds of ammunition, underscoring the suspect’s preparedness for violent confrontation, Singh said.
Following his arrest, Basumatary was taken to RK Mission Hospital under police escort for medical treatment. Meanwhile, Sub-Inspector Tamo Bakhang sustained abrasions and chest injuries due to the exchange of fire, while ASI Manish suffered multiple abrasions during a physical struggle with the suspect.
Preliminary investigations have confirmed that Basumatary is a habitual offender with an extensive criminal history, including cases of robbery, illegal arms possession, and narcotics trafficking. He is wanted in multiple cases across various police stations both in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
A case has been registered at Chimpu PS under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984, Arms Act, 1959, and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, Singh said adding that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under Inspector Rina Sonam has been formed to conduct further inquiries.
Following the operation, the Arunachal Police issued a stern warning to narcotics traffickers, emphasizing that drug-related crimes will be met with swift and decisive action.
"Arunachal Pradesh will never be a haven for drug traffickers. Our vigilance is constant, and our operations will continue until every such network is dismantled. Those who endanger our society through the narcotics trade will be pursued relentlessly and brought to justice," the SP stated.
