Australian PM Albanese departs for Indonesia in first foreign visit in second term

Canberra, May 14 (UNI) Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has departed for Indonesia on his first international visit since winning re-election. Albanese on Wednesday evening flew to Jakarta to meet with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

In a statement prior to departure, Albanese said that he and Subianto would discuss the close relations between Australia and Indonesia and how the bilateral relationship can be deepened.

He will be joined in Indonesia by Penny Wong, Australia's minister for foreign affairs, and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke.

From Jakarta, Albanese will on Friday fly to Rome to attend Pope Leo XIV's inauguration at the Vatican City on Sunday.

During his visit to the Vatican City, Albanese will meet with fellow world leaders also in attendance.

He said on Monday that he would use the opportunity to discuss "trade and tariff issues" with world leaders, including Canadian PM Mark Carney and European Union officials.

Before returning to Australia, Albanese will stop in Singapore to meet with PM Lawrence Wong on Tuesday.
