Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj emerge as top destinations in UP

Lucknow, Apr 29 (UNI) The findings of a survey carried out by Deloitte, under the direction of the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, has revealed Ayodhya, Varanasi and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh as the top spiritual and tourist destinations among both domestic and international visitors.
The survey also highlighted that each pilgrim spent an average Rs 5,877.63 during their visit, marking a significant contribution to UP's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP).
Sharing the findings of the survey, Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said, "The survey, called 'Maha Kumbh Spiritual Survey–2025', was initiated by the central government to identify the country's top pilgrimage destinations for targeted development. It was conducted from January 28 to February 26 at various locations in Prayagraj including Teliarganj, Jhunsi, Arail and Parade Ground, by the All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG)."
He said that the survey included participation from 1,093 foreign tourists from countries such as the USA, UK, Canada, Nepal, Australia and Fiji, along with 3,51,295 domestic pilgrims. "Among previous visits, 27.32 percent of respondents had last visited Ayodhya, 22.68 percent had visited Sangam in Prayagraj and 8.81 percent had visited Varanasi. For future visits, 32.57 percent preferred Sangam, 12.46 percent Ayodhya and 7.46 percent Varanasi. In terms of overall favourite destinations, 22.55 percent chose Ayodhya, 19.96 percent Sangam and 12.72 percent Varanasi," he said.
The survey also shed light on visitor preferences on travelling solo or with family. The findings showed that while domestic tourists often travelled with family, the foreign travellers preferred travelling alone. In terms of percentage, 40 percent of Indian tourists visited with family, 30.88 percent alone and 29.13 percent with friends.
Among foreign tourists, 55.26 percent travelled alone, 24.43 percent with family and 20.31 percent with friends. Spending patterns showed that tourists allocated 41.11 percent of their expenses to travel, 16.64 percent to accommodation, 11.24 percent to food, 11.08 percent to religious items, 2.13 percent to entertainment, 7.42 percent to shopping and 10.38 percent to other miscellaneous heads.
