Bengal Guv directs red cross to provide relief to violence-hit people

Kolkata, Apr 14 (UNI) West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose on Monday directed the Indian Red Cross Society to immediately provide assistance to those affected by the riots, particularly in the Murshidabad and Malda districts, as well as other disturbed areas.

Raj Bhavan's directive came after the Leader of the Opposition appealed to Bose to provide relief to the riot victims in the wake of reports that a large number of people have fled the violence-hit areas of Murshidabad and sought refuge in the neighbouring Malda district.
The exodus follows widespread unrest in several parts of Murshidabad — including Suti, Dhuliyan, and Samsherganj — in protest against the Waqf Amendment Act.

Immediately afterwards, the Governor instructed the Indian Red Cross Society to reach out to the affected people and arrange for essential relief supplies.

“Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose directs Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) to provide immediate relief to the affected parties in the riot affected areas particularly in Murshidabad and Malda districts and other disturbed areas," a Raj Bahwan media release read.
Dr S K Pattanayak IAS (Retd), Chairman of IRCS and Mr. Sandeep Rajput, GS & Chief Nodal officer of Rapid Action Cell (Raj Bhavan) will be nodal officers, the release said.
The Raj Bhawan initiative to engage voluntary organisations for the purpose of distributing relief materials to the disturbed areas comes after Adhikari in a post on his X handle wrote, “I would also like to request His Excellency Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal; Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose to kindly mobilise the Red Cross Society's West Bengal unit so that they can visit the affected areas for distribution of relief materials.”

The BJP MLA from Nandigram also called on philanthropic organisations to step forward and support those who have fled their homes and are now taking shelter in various parts of Malda district.
“At this juncture, I would like to appeal to philanthropic Organisations such as Ramakrishna Mission, Bharat Sevashram Sangha and ISKCON to help these people in distress by arranging food materials and drinking water,” Adhikari wrote on his post.

“Those who couldn't move out are struggling to meet their basic needs. Their homes have been looted and vandalised. Even their source of drinking water, such as ponds and wells, have been contaminated," Adhikari had said.

Meanwhile, Governor Ananda Bose, in a video message, said the situation in Murshidabad is being monitored on a real-time basis, and the perpetrators of crime will not be spared.

“The situation in Murshidabad is being monitored on a real time basis. Discussions have been held between the chief minister and the governor. Incident reports are being gathered from the law enforcement authorities, including the BSF and the local police. The union ministry of home affairs has been apprised of the situation,” the governor said.

“The Ministry of Home Affairs has deployed a sufficient number of central forces, and more forces are ready. Let the miscreants and their godfathers realise that nobody will be allowed to take the law in their hands. In this fight against injustice and violence, the government and all well beings of the society are strongly united to put an end to it,” the governor added.
