BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay to be airlifted to Delhi for treatment

Kolkata, June 19 (UNI) BJP MP and former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay was urgently taken to Dum Dum Airport to be airlifted to AIIMS, New Delhi, amid growing concerns over his critical health condition.
Hospital authorities confirmed on Wednesday that while his health has remained stable, the crisis is far from over.
“We felt that the situation is not very good. If taken to Delhi AIIMS, we hope the doctors there will be able to provide even better treatment. We hope he recovers quickly,” central minister and state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said.
Gangopadhyay was taken out of the hospital and put into an ambulance around 4 pm. A green corridor was created to take the BJP MP to Dum Dum Airport and from there he will be taken to Delhi on an air ambulance.
“Considering the MP's physical condition, all necessary arrangements are being made in the air ambulance," a senior BJP leader said.
Gangopadhyay, 63, who was admitted to a private multispeciality hospital in South Kolkata on Saturday night with severe vomiting, abdominal pain, and distension, has been diagnosed with acute pancreatitis accompanied by gastrointestinal sepsis. He is currently being treated in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) under intensive monitoring.
In a statement released on Wednesday afternoon, hospital officials said he remains under close observation in the ICU and is being supported with “low-flow oxygen,” a method used to supply oxygen at a controlled and gradual rate. Though his condition has not worsened over the past 24 hours, there has been no marked improvement either.
A multi-disciplinary medical board comprising experts in internal medicine, pulmonology, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and gastrointestinal surgery has been formed to oversee his treatment. The medical team has indicated that long-term care will be essential in his recovery.
Given the seriousness of his condition and the potential need for extended treatment, sources within the BJP suggest that the party is preparing to shift Gangopadhyay to Delhi. If airlifted, a team of specialist doctors is expected to accompany him to ensure continued medical supervision during the transfer.
The state BJP leadership is reportedly in touch with the Centre, and preparations for his transfer are already underway. Party leaders, including Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari and former MP Dilip Ghosh, have visited the hospital to check on Gangopadhyay’s condition.
Gangopadhyay rose to prominence as a judge of the Calcutta High Court and made headlines for his judicial activism. In March 2024, he stepped down from the bench and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He contested and won the Lok Sabha elections from the Tamluk constituency in West Bengal earlier this year.
