Agartala, May 2 (UNI) The Ministry of Housing has sanctioned Rs 14.96 Cr for the completion of the Light House Project in Tripura, a flagship housing initiative under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana for urban poor living in the slum areas.
Tripura Urban Planning and Development Authority (TUDA) officials said that the project was undertaken six years ago but couldn’t make any significant progress because of some problems from the implementing agency and allegations of corruption in the process.
The project was held up; soon after becoming Chief Minister in June 2022, Dr Manik Saha took special initiative and restarted the work. With his persuasion, the central government recently sanctioned additional funds for completion of the project by this year, officials stated.
“The Light House Project aims to provide permanent housing to economically weaker and low-income families living in slums in Agartala. Besides initial difficulties, the project received a jolt due to the COVID pandemic, adverse terrain, and last year’s floods delaying progress. The state government has been working relentlessly to ensure timely completion,” officials stated.
During his recent trip to Delhi, CM has taken up the issue with the Ministry of Finance and Urban Development and sought additional funds, which yielded fruit, officials said and added, “TUDA is committed to finish the project as early as possible.”
