Hyderabad, Mar 18 (UNI) Telangana Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Tuesday termed the passage of the SC (Rationalisation of Reservations) Bill 2025 in the State Assembly as a 'landmark' decision that fulfilled the decades-long demand.
Reddy, who chaired the Cabinet Sub-Committee on implementing the Supreme Court's verdict on SC categorisation, credited the Congress government under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for fulfilling a demand that had remained unaddressed in both united Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for decades.
He highlighted that while previous governments passed resolutions supporting SC categorisation, the Congress government took concrete steps to implement it. The Shamim Akhtar Commission, appointed to study the socio-economic status of 59 SC sub-castes, recommended dividing them into three groups based on inter-se backwardness.
Under the new classification, 15 most disadvantaged SC groups received 1 percent reservation, 18 moderately benefitted groups got 9 per cent, and 26 better-off groups secured 5 per cent reservation.
The Minister assured that the Congress government would increase SC reservations once the 2026 Census data confirms population growth.
He reaffirmed the party’s historic commitment to SC categorisation and acknowledged the contributions of leaders like Damodar Rajanarsimha, D. Seethakka, Sridhar Babu, Ponnam Prabhakar, and Mallu Ravi in achieving this milestone.
