Diarrhoea situation in Odisha shows declining trend: Official

Bhubaneswar, June 20 (UNI) The diarrhoeal situation in Odisha is showing a declining trend, thanks to the concerted efforts of field-level teams from various departments, official sources said on Friday.
Currently, anti-diarrhoeal operations are underway across the state, with special focus on districts such as Jajpur, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Cuttack, and Dhenkanal.
Additional doctors and support staff have been deployed in these districts. Adequate stocks of medicines, oral rehydration salts (ORS), fluids, and injections have been made available at multiple levels — including hospitals, health sub-centres, ASHA workers, and Anganwadi Centres (AWCs).
Expert teams from both the Central and State governments are visiting the affected areas to monitor and guide the on-ground operations.
House-to-house awareness campaigns have been intensified in the priority districts.
According to official sources, a total of 400 diarrhoea patients were admitted to hospitals in the affected districts on June 19. Of them, 299 were discharged after recovery.
State Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling has directed that the campaign continue until the end of the monsoon season to prevent potential outbreaks of water-borne diseases, including diarrhoea.
He urged people not to panic, but to remain vigilant and maintain hygienic practices in both personal and community life.
Health Secretary Aswathy S. has also emphasised the importance of hygiene, handwashing, and drinking boiled water. Water supply agencies have been instructed to carry out intensive disinfection of water sources at regular intervals.
Aswathy noted that people are now reporting to hospitals at the early stages of infection, which is a positive sign. She instructed field-level health workers to continue door-to-door screening, early detection, and timely treatment for the next two months.
Director of Public Health Services Dr. Nilakantha Mishra presented the latest updates and highlighted key issues during a review meeting chaired by the Health Secretary on Friday.
Dr. Mishra stated that Jajpur district, where the outbreak was first reported on June 10, has shown a declining trend over the past seven days.
The outbreak was initially recorded with 126 cases on June 10, peaking at 150 new cases on June 11. However, from June 12 onwards, areas such as Danagadi, Korei, Dharmasala, and Vyasanagar Urban Local Body (ULB) have witnessed a downward trend.
New admissions in the district dropped from 135 on June 12 to 121 on June 15, and further down to 91 on June 18. As of last evening, only 71 new cases were reported.
Although sporadic cases continue to emerge from areas like Badachana and Sukinda, they are being promptly attended to by rapid response teams and managed in local hospitals.
As of last night, a cumulative total of 1,127 patients had been admitted in Jajpur district. Of them, 1,045 have been discharged after recovery, while 82 remain under treatment.
Keonjhar district has also shown a similar downward trend. On June 10, a total of 79 people were admitted to hospitals, which dropped to 44 by June 12, and further decreased to 38 on June 18.
By Thursday night, only 17 new cases were reported in the district. The cumulative total stood at 497 hospital admissions, with 454 recoveries and 34 patients still under treatment.
