Directorate of Printing and Stationery, Manipur digitizes over 4 lakh documents

Imphal, Apr 6 (UNI) Directorate of Printing and Stationery (Government Press) Manipur has digitized over 4 lakh documents, including about 40,648 Gazettes.
The glorious history of the erstwhile Government Press, Manipur, which was established on June 27,1918, and later upgraded to a full-fledged Directorate of Printing & Stationery on July 25,1979 was discussed during a one-day discussion on the topic 'The Manipur Gazettes and its importance' here on Saturday.
Michael Achom, Secretary, GAD, Transport & AH, Manipur, said the government is trying to make the e-gazette available to all. The importance, meaning, and purpose of the Gazette should be understood, and the masses should be informed about the nuances of the Gazette. The Gazette is the final authority in any event of a legal or official matter, he added. The government is also planning to make the Gazettes available in a people-friendly manner, he said.
In the seminar organized by the Directorate of Printing and Stationary, Michael further informed that the websites of the Directorate offer subscriptions, and the database can be used to automatically send the Gazettes promptly to all concerned.
Th Kirankumar, Secretary IT, said that every Department, officials depend on the government Gazette, notifications to ensure that the government programmes and policies are implemented in the right direction as envisaged by the government.
People can download the Gazette by giving a nominal fee however, the intermediary fee is high, which needs to be looked into, he added. The Gazette has to be made available in an easy way, and the subscribers and the public should be able to find the desired Gazette easily, he said.
A Romita , Director Printing and Stationery said the Gazette is a legal and authentic document of the government, and the Directorate took up the gigantic task of digitizing all the Gazettes, Administration reports, and so far, about four lakh documents have been digitized.
The process is going on, and the Ordinary and Extraordinary Gazettes are published efficiently. Record maintenance, documentation are something unique and extraordinary, which have been wonderfully done since the early days, like the “Cheitharol Kumbaba” which chronicles events since 33 AD, she added. There is a possibility of documents being damaged over the ages; hence, digitization ensures permanency and protection of the documents.
Deputy Secretary, GAD, A Rangina Chanu, spoke on the issues related to the proper maintenance of the Gazette and its relevance.
Renowned Filmmaker James Khangembam presented a documentary about the activities of the department. The latest technology used in printing official, election, and other materials was shown. Besides the activities of the employees who perform the detailed work of the error-free maintenance, printing was also shown.
Officials of the Directorate also spoke about the Gazette, which is a government-printed publication used to notify and disseminate official information, laws, regulations, and decisions. It was informed that the Gazette is the official and legal repository of government decisions. The Gazettes printed by the Directorate were displayed during the seminar.
The official opening function was followed by a day-long discussion attended by officials, experts, media, legal experts, and students on various issues related to Gazette.
Dr Arambam Noni Meitei presented a paper on Political History and Importance of Gazette, N Satyajeet on Gazette and Media reporting, Prof Y Premananda on Importance of Gazette and Law, and Prof Ch Ibohal on Gazette and Library Science. Michael Achom moderated the discussion.
