Ex-MLA & BJP leader dies by suicide in Srinagar

Srinagar, Mar 20 (UNI) BJP leader and former MLA, Gurez Faqeer Mohammad Khan, allegedly shot himself dead at Srinagar's high-security Tulsi Bagh area on Thursday, officials said.

Khan, a senior leader of the BJP who unsuccessfully contested the assembly polls on the party ticket in 2024, had a gunshot wound.

Police said initial findings suggest the incident appears to be a case of suicide.



"An incident of firearm discharge was reported today in the Tulsibagh area of Srinagar, resulting in the death of former legislator, a resident of Gurez. Police has taken cognizance of the matter, and legal proceedings under Section 194 of the BNSS have been initiated at Shergarhi Police Station," a police statement said.

"Initial findings suggest the incident appears to be a case of suicide. Further investigation is ongoing, considering all aspects," the statement said.

Khan was elected to the Jammu and Kashmir assembly in 1996 as an Independent candidate. He joined BJP in 2020.

BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur said the former MLA died by suicide and it was not immediately known as to why he took the extreme step.

Expressing grief over his demise, Jammu and Kashmir Lt Govrernor Manoj Sinha said Faqeer Mohammad Khan's contribution to the development of Gurez is immense and he touched and improved thousands of lives.

"On this extremely sad occasion, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends and followers. I pray for his soul," he added.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, "Deeply saddened by the passing of former legislator Faqeer Mohd Khan. He was a true grassroots leader. My heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace."
